Liverpool were showing an interest in Maarten Vandevoordt last year – and he has now agreed to leave Genk for RB Leipzig… in 2024.

The Reds are always looking for top young talents around the world and they seemingly fancied Vandevoordt.

Calciomercato reported last season that Liverpool were keen on signing Vandevoordt. Roma and Real Madrid were also believed to be keen.

Vandevoordt, 20, is considered to be one of the top young goalkeepers in Europe and has shown potential in 70 first-team games for Genk.

Liverpool do have a number of talented young goalkeepers already though.

Caoimhin Kelleher is only 23 whilst Marcelo Pitaluga, Harvey Davies, Liam Hughes and Vitezslav Jaros are talents for the future.

Liverpool maybe felt they didn’t need to go and bring in another goalkeeper right now, especially as first-choice stopper Alisson is only 29.

If Liverpool still wanted Vandevoordt then they have now missed out in a strange transfer.

Genk confirmed on Tuesday that Vandevoordt has agreed to sign for Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.

Yet the deal isn’t taking place this summer. It’s not taking place next January and it’s not even taking place next summer.

Nope, Leipzig have agreed a deal to sign Vandevoordt in the summer of 2024 – more than two years in the future.

It’s rare you see a deal set up so far down the line but Leipzig have decided they don’t want to risk missing out on Vandevoordt.

The idea will be that the Belgian taken ends up taking over from Peter Gulacsi in the Leipzig goal, and he may be primed for that in a couple of years.

Given Liverpool’s tendency to target Red Bull talent, the Reds may still take a look at Vandevoordt when he finally gets to Germany.
