Liverpool winger Sheyi Ojo has earned praise after making an impact in his first outing for new loan club Millwall over the weekend.
The Reds were hoping to sell Ojo over the summer. The wide man has been with Liverpool for 10 years now, having joined from Milton Keynes Dons as a kid.
Ojo himself fancied leaving permanently, but no suitable offers arrived.
In the end, Liverpool sent Ojo on loan to Millwall. This is Ojo’s seventh loan spell away from Anfield; Wigan Athletic, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Fulham, Reims, Rangers and Cardiff City have also been temporary homes for the winger.
On Saturday, Ojo made his first start for Millwall. They picked up a 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion, with Ojo playing in the front three.
Boss Gary Rowett has now told News at Den that he felt Ojo was a ‘major, major threat’ alongside Jed Wallace.
Rowett noted that it was a tough game for both of them. Millwall had to battle for second balls and fight to spring counter-attackers, but Ojo and Wallace still did well.
“When we got our goal I thought Sheyi Ojo and Jed looked a major, major threat on the counter-attack and we really should have scored another goal in that period, which I think would have given us a really good chance to win the game,” Rowett said.
“It was a tough game for Sheyi. If you look at the type of game it’s a tough one for him and Jed. It’s a game of second balls, a game of fighting. It’s one where you have to go and compete all the time and they are the type of players that if you can find them space, they will hurt most teams,” he added.
Millwall will be delighted with Ojo’s display, but it will make little difference to Liverpool.
Ojo hasn’t played a competitive game for Liverpool since 2017, and he has likely kicked his last ball under Jurgen Klopp no matter how well he fares in London.
