Liverpool had high hopes for winger Sheyi Ojo, but his latest loan move is another indication that it just isn’t going to work for him at Anfield.
The Reds battled serious competition to sign Ojo way back in 2011, landing him from Milton Keynes Dons for a fee of around £2million.
Given that Ojo was only 14 at the time, that was a considerable price – and he was expected to become a star at Anfield.
After loan stints at Wigan Athletic and Wolverhampton Wanderers, Ojo started featuring in Jurgen Klopp’s first-team setup in 2016.
Fans were impressed, especially after a game against Bournemouth, branding him ‘immense’ and ‘outstanding’, backing him for a huge future.
Since the end of the 2015-16 season, Ojo has only played two first-team games for Liverpool.
Loan spells with Fulham, Reims, Rangers and Cardiff City haven’t taken Ojo any closer to first-team football at Anfield.
This looked like the summer for Ojo to leave permanently. He has somehow been on Liverpool’s books for 10 years now, but isn’t getting anywhere.
Now 24, Ojo has made yet another loan move, signing for Millwall for the season. When he returns from that loan, Ojo will have just one year left on the five-year extension he signed in 2018.
To put it frankly, Ojo isn’t going to be picked by Klopp again. He has already been leapfrogged by Harvey Elliott and, most probably, Kaide Gordon too.
This isn’t how many thought Ojo’s Liverpool career would go, but it seems clear that he will never feature for Klopp again, no matter how he performs at Millwall this season.
