Liverpool are one of three European heavyweights reportedly considering moves for Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur ahead of the January window – a player that Jamie Redknapp claims has been Spurs’ best player this term.

Bentancur, 25, has been in sensational form for Spurs ever since he joined the club. But this season, his form has gone up a level – adding attacking numbers to his play. Indeed, he has five goals and two assists in 21 games for Spurs.

Little surprise then, that the 54-time Uruguay international is attracting interest from some of the world’s biggest clubs. El Crack Deportivo report that Liverpool, Manchester United and Real Madrid are all interested in landing Bentancur.

A player that ex-Liverpool midfielder Redknapp raced about earlier this season. He said that he has been Tottenham’s “unsung hero”, and while Harry Kane gets all the plaudits and rightly so – Bentancur has been his side’s best in 22-23.

“I always think about the engine room. Bentancur has been their unsung hero. Harry Kane gets all of the plaudits, but Bentancur has been the best player for me. Does things in such a quiet way,”  Redknapp told the Sky Sports podcast.

Liverpool considering Bentancur: Redknapp claims he has been Spurs best

Liverpool desperately need midfielders. Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner are all out of contract at the end of the season. Arthur remains sidelined with a long-term injury after joining the club on loan from Juventus.

Then, there is the question of Thiago and Jordan Henderson now well into their thirties. Liverpool need an injection in their midfield, a player that can do both – box to box. Goals, but with a defensive mindset. Bentancur can do that.

Bought for an initial £15.8million plus £5million in bonuses, Tottenham will not want to lose their bargain buy. But every player has his price. What is Bentancur’s price? Well beyond double the figure they paid to sign him in January.
