Liverpool have not learned about the failed deal for French midfielder Nabil Fekir back in 2018 with the Reds pursuing another deal for an injury-prone player.

Arne Slot’s Liverpool have yet to make a signing this summer but HITC has reported that the Reds are closing in on the signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili.

The Georgian goalkeeper is set to move to Anfield in 2025 with the Valencia shot-stopper set to spend the current campaign on loan at the Spanish side before moving to Liverpool in 2025.

However, HITC understands that Liverpool are in talks with Juventus over a deal for Federico Chiesa but if Liverpool go through with this deal for the 26-year-old Italian, they would not have learned from the mistake they nearly made in 2018.

Liverpool have not learned from 2017 mistake

Back in the summer of 2018, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool were in the middle of a transformative summer with the Reds signing Alisson from AS Roma.

Five months later, Virgil Van Dijk would complete a £75 million move to Anfield and he would prove to be one of the most influential signings of the 21st century.

However, during that transformative summer, Liverpool wanted a midfield addition and settled on Frenchman Nabil Fekir, who was playing for French side Lyon at the time.

The deal got to the stage where Fekir completed Liverpool’s media duties before completing his move to Anfield. However, the Reds pulled the plug on the deal at the eleventh hour.

According to a report from The Times back in 2018, Liverpool pulled the plug on a deal as they discovered an issue with the Frenchman during his medical and they called the transfer off.

If Liverpool were to complete a deal for Chiesa this summer, it would be a risk and it would appear that the Merseyside club would not have learned from that failed deal of Fekir back in 2018.

Federico Chiesa’s previous injury record

There is no doubting the Italian’s quality with the winger showing during the European Championships back in 2021 that he can be the main man.

However, one issue that is certainly a pertinent one is his injury record and Liverpool would certainly be taking a risk if they did pursue a deal.

Last season for Juventus, Chiesa had five different injury problems that meant the winger missed around six weeks of the season.

Whilst these are little issues, it would be a risk for Liverpool. The Reds pulled out of a deal for Fekir due to injury issues, signing Chiesa in spite of these problems seems like a risk.
