According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have bought out a clause that would have seen Derby County net 20% of any future fee received for Kaide Gordon.
The journalist states that the Reds have paid just £500,000 to buy-out this 20 per cent sell-on clause, and that may prove to be a very wise move indeed.
Buying out a 20 per cent clause for just £500k would value Gordon at just £4m, and it’s fair to say that the winger’s ceiling is much higher than that.
Indeed, Gordon, at the age of just 17, already has first-team appearances for Liverpool under his belt, and according to Goal, he’s the 28th best player under the age of 19 in world football.
Gordon could go on to become an absolute star, he’s been hailed as an ‘exceptional talent’ by Jurgen Klopp, while Trent Alexander-Arnold has claimed that he has ‘bags of potential’ – high praise indeed.
However, even if Gordon doesn’t quite hit the heights that are expected of him, this still represents a good move for Liverpool.
Indeed, the hype surrounding this youngster coupled up with the fact he’s playing for Liverpool at such a young age probably already means he’s worth more than the £4m valuation this clause would reflect.
Look at some of Liverpool’s dealings with hyped-up youngsters in recent years, they received £15m for Jordon Ibe and £20m for Rhian Brewster – two players who hadn’t proved much at the time they were sold to Bournemouth and Sheffield United.
Even if Gordon follows the path of Brewster or Ibe, Liverpool will have saved themselves over a million pounds by buying-out this clause, and if he fetches even more than that, the Reds’ savings will be even greater.
The Reds have seemingly played a blinder here.
