Jurgen Klopp has claimed that Kaide Gordon is an ‘exceptional talent’, as he told his Liverpool press conference.
The Liverpool boss added by saying that Gordon is someone who is ‘always on our mind’ regarding selection and possibly playing tonight.
The 17-year-old impressed by scoring for Liverpool during their FA Cup win over Shrewsbury from the weekend.
And now he is hoping that he can maintain his place in the XI ahead of the visit against Arsenal in the semi-final of the League Cup at Anfield.
With Mo Salah on Africa Cup of Nations duty, it certainly increases his chances, but it is a step up in level, quality and difficulty for the young gun.
This is what Klopp had to say about Gordon and the teenager earning more game time during these next few weeks, especially with Salah and Sadio Mane unavailable.
“Kaide is always on our mind,” said Klopp. “He’s an exceptional talent. And had an exceptional pre-season.
“But then he had a little drop in form, which is normal with his age. Played with the U23s mostly. He had good games there and less good games.
“Outstanding talent. He is here. As long as he is here and fit, then he is always in my mind. We will see what that exactly leads to.”
Klopp has proven before that he is willing to throw his youngsters into these competitions, regardless of the opposition.
The interesting point about Arsenal is that both teams might be weakened before a ball is kicked because of injury worries and COVID.
So, whilst Klopp contemplates playing his youngsters, Mikel Arteta might do it anyway in a few hours time.
The Arsenal boss played 18-year-old Charlie Patino in the middle of the park against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup and if Granit Xhaka is unavailable, then it wouldn’t be a surprise if he starts again.
