Liverpool were left stung by their chase for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi but the club should move for another midfielder.

Arne Slot’s Liverpool kicked off their new era under the Dutchman with a 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town at Portman Road with Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota scoring the key goals for the Reds.

In terms of transfer activity, Liverpool have been one of the quietest sides in the Premier League with the Reds closing in on the signing of Valencia’s goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvilli.

Liverpool were encouraged in their pursuit of Martin Zubimendi but the Spanish midfielder decided to remain at San Sebastian this summer.

Whilst the signing of their top target in Zubimendi failed to come to fruition, there is another midfield target that Slot’s side should go for.

Liverpool have to sign Quinten Timber, Arne Slot described him as ‘special’

HITC reported over the weekend that Liverpool were one of the sides in attendance during Feyenoord’s game over the weekend.

Multiple Feyenoord players have been linked with moves away from the Dutch side this summer, including Lutsharel Geertruida, Santiago Gimenez and Quinten Timber.

It is unclear who Liverpool were scouting during their trip to Holland but if the Reds are keen on a midfield addition, Timber could be the way forward.

Prior to his move to Anfield this summer, Slot was full of praise for the Dutch midfielder, who is the brother of Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber.

“If he continues to develop as he has this year, then his ceiling is extremely high because he has undergone great development over the past year,” Slot told ZiggoSport.

“He is a special player. He has the strength and speed to create an overload in midfield. I think he has a very good mentality and is a good lad. [Quinten and Jurrien] are both very, very good.”

Quinten Timber could be a cheap alternative to Zubimendi

Liverpool were prepared to pay the £51 million release clause in Zubimendi’s contract, but Timber would cost the Merseyside club a lot less than that.

We had reported back in May that Liverpool were watching Timber and the Reds have to make a move for the midfielder as a Zubimendi alternative.

The midfielder, according to FBREF, excels at the physical side of the game and also likes to pop up with a goal or two.

Last season for Feyenoord, Timber scored seven goals and provided nine assists in the Eredivisie and at just £22 million, he could be one of the bargains of the summer for Liverpool.
