Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Frenkie de Jong this summer.

Earlier in 2022, and after the January transfer window, Sport in Spain reported that Liverpool were keen on the Barcelona midfielder.

The Netherlands international is linked with a move away from Camp Nou due to the Catalan club’s financial difficulties.

And despite having a release clause of around £337 million, Barcelona are now willing to part with the reported Liverpool target for a possible £50 million.

According to Calciomercato, the La Liga outfit will not drop their valuation below €60 million, which equates to £50 million in GBP.

And if true, Liverpool should be all over this.

Erik ten Hag represented a genuine threat to the Reds, with the Ajax boss set to join Manchester United this summer.

As a result, the Red Devils are also linked, but Fabrizio Romano reported last month that despite De Jong’s history with Ten Hag in Amsterdam, the Dutch footballer wasn’t interested in a summer transfer to Old Trafford.

No brainer

In the modern age, £50 million really isn’t a lot of money – and when you’re talking about a generational midfielder like De Jong, it’s absolutely peanuts.

Remember, technically Liverpool still haven’t replaced Georginio Wijnaldum following his Bosman exit from Anfield last summer.

And with Thiago and Jordan Henderson both on the wrong side of 30, it’s definitely plausible that Jurgen Klopp will be adding at least one midfielder to his senior squad during the summer transfer window.

And in light of what we’re learning about De Jong, well it’s an absolute no-brainer that Klopp and the Reds’ hierarchy go after him.

United being out of the picture is one thing, but his price-tag is another thing entirely and he’s too cheap for the Merseysiders to ignore, providing the report from Italy is accurate.
