Reds boss Jürgen Klopp will surely be looking to bolster his defensive ranks during the January transfer window, if he has genuine ambitions of his side challenging for major honours on all fronts this season.

Liverpool have been linked with a big money move for Saints ace Virgil van Dijk since the summer, but have so far failed to bring him to Anfield.

Southampton will consider offers in the region of £70 million for the Dutchman, according to Yahoo Sports.

Thats seems like an awful lot of money, however, and the Merseyside outfit could save £35 million by signing Juventus ace Daniele Rugani instead, who is a January transfer target for the Gunners, according to Italian media outlet Il Posticipo.

They suggest that Arsenal are lining up a €40 million (£35.4 million) for the Italian, one that could very well be accepted by the Old Lady.

With Liverpool’s need for a centre-back far greater than Arsenal’s, however, Klopp should do everything within his power to bring the classy defender to Anfield in January.

Standing at 6ft 3in, Rugani is very strong in the air, and possesses an impressive build for someone so young – something that is a necessity for anyone moving to the Premier League from a foreign land.

Daniele Rugani chance of goal for Juventus during the Serie A match between UC Sampdoria and Juventus FC at Stadio Luigi Ferraris on March 19, 2017 in Genoa, Italy.

He is exceptionally gifted with the ball at his feet for a defender, and his ball dispersion skills are the envy of many a centre-back in world football.

The Italian would undoubtedly a touch of quality to the Reds’ backline, and Klopp should not hesitate to sign him next month.

Not only would he be a fantastic addition to the Liverpool squad, but he would also represent a far cheaper, and arguably better, option for them than Van Dijk.
