Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has given his thoughts on Netherlands star Matthijs de Ligt, who in the past few days has been linked with the Anfield outfit, on Sky Sports.

The 19-year-old Ajax captain – valued at around £75million according to Fox Sports – is set to feature for the Oranje in Thursday night’s Nations League semi-final encounter with England in Portugal.

According to a report from Spanish media outlet Sport, De Ligt’s agent Mino Raiola is urging his client to join Liverpool rather than Barcelona or Manchester United.

With Jurgen Klopp’s charges having won the Champions League and come ever so close to pipping Manchester City in an epic Premier League title tussle, the Reds are once again a force to be reckoned with.

Two Liverpool stars, Virgil van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum, are also in the Netherlands team along with De Ligt, who congratulated his fellow defender on Instagram after the triumph in Madrid.

Writing for Sky Sports, Carragher said of De Ligt: “It’s not just his ability… but also his leadership qualities. I saw him giving a speech at the end of the season on a stage, speaking like he was 29, not 19. To be captain of Ajax and with them getting to where they got to this season, he’s clearly a leader and top class.

“He’s got the physical attributes too. I played that position as a young kid and sometimes you can make mistakes by getting knocked about if someone is too strong for you or too quick for you because you’re not fully developed physically. But that’s not a problem for De Ligt at all, he’s a man. He looks like he’s 24 or 25. That’s a massive advantage for him at a young age.”

With such a glowing assessment of De Ligt from a Liverpool and England legend, not to mention a star who also played in defence, there ought to be no hesitation in the Merseyside outfit moving for the prodigious teenager.
