Paul Merson has said on Sky Sports Premier League (10:01pm, January 21, 2022) that he was wrong about Liverpool forward Diogo Jota.

The Sky Sports pundit was impressed by Jota’s performance in the 2-0 win against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final tie on Thursday evening.

The Portugal international forward scored both the goals for Liverpool, and former Arsenal star Merson was impressed.

Merson said about Jota: “I just think he is phenomenal.”

The Sky Sports pundit added: “I thought he would come there as a £40 million sit on the bench, play every now and then. Ge is a star player, top player.”

Diogo Jota is a Liverpool star

In our view, Jota is a big player for Liverpool and is a star for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The 25-year-old is now clearly ahead of Roberto Firmino in the pecking order when everyone is fit and available.

Jota is mobile, connects well with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, and scores goals.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers star has scored 10 goals and provided one assist in 17 Premier League starts for Liverpool so far the season.

The Liverpool no. 20 scored nine goals in 12 Premier League starts last season.

Salah and Mane are away on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, but Jota has stepped up in their absence.

In our view, for Liverpool to win the Premier League and the Champions League this season, Jota will have to play a big role.
