A warm moment took place between Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal after Yamal’s Spain picked up a 1-0 A.E.T win over Argentina in the World Cup Final.

Messi’s quest for a second World Cup winners’ medal ended in the 2026 Final with a loss to Spain.

While dealing with a visibly emotional loss, Messi put everything aside to greet and congratulate Barcelona’s superstar Lamine Yamal when the 19-year-old approached Messi after the Final.

Lionel Messi’s interaction with Lamine Yamal is a perfect example of sportsmanship

Messi was visibly upset after the loss in the final, taking in the moment on the field as the Spanish players celebrated around him.

When Yamal sees Messi, and the 39-year-old realizes the young Spanish star is approaching, Messi stands up to embrace the phenom before sitting back down.

Messi’s open fondness for his former club, Barcelona, and the kids that came through the La Masia academy is well-known.

Fellow La Masia graduate Pedri was also among the first players to console Messi after the Final. But Messi’s relationship with Yamal goes to another level.

Unfortunately, Messi never got to play alongside Yamal before leaving Barcelona. However, Messi was aware of his talent as he was rising through the academy in his early teens.

The background of Messi and Yamal’s interaction is colored by the fight that Leandro Paredes had with Spanish players such as Gavi. Nobody would ever involve Messi in such moments because the Argentine legend is not known to have such outbursts.

It was another one of the defining losses of Messi’s career and might have been his final time playing at such a high level.

Watching Yamal take the crown he held for almost two decades has to be bittersweet, but their on-field interaction highlights how much class Messi has even in the dark moments of his career.
