Gary Lineker has told talkSPORT that Bukayo Saka offers a ‘massive advantage’ to Gareth Southgate and England as the Arsenal winger can play anywhere on the pitch.

The England icon hailed Saka ahead of the Three Lions’ Euro 2020 semi-final with Denmark on Wednesday. The game marked a historic night for the Arsenal talent, who BBC Sport note became the youngest Englishman to start a semi-final or final at a major tournament.

And Saka proved to be a shining light for England as they booked their place in the final by beating Denmark 2-1. The Three Lions had trailed Kasper Hjulmand’s side after a stunning free-kick from Mikkel Damsgaard, before the Gunners’ gem helped spark an instant reply.

Saka delivered a threatening cross into the visitor’s box that Denmark captain Simon Kjaer could only turn into his net. Had he not, Raheem Sterling would have been expected to bag his fourth goal of the tournament. After Saka peeled off his man to meet Harry Kane’s pass.

Saka was dangerous throughout, with the Arsenal star regularly taking possession in tight pockets and finding a way out. His ability to run free from his man was also crucial to England having success on their right-flank. While Lineker expected his versatility to be key.

“He can play anywhere, which will be a massive advantage to him,” Lineker said. “And he’s been brilliant, but if you look at who we’ve got: Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Callum Hudson-Odoi. The list goes on.

“There’s a lot of competition, but his performances have been brilliant, particularly as Arsenal have struggled in many ways. For a youngster to stand up, under those circumstances, is a really good sign.”

Arsenal will love Saka stepping up for England amid Lineker praise

Arsenal will love watching Saka step up on the big occasion for England, and earn praise from pundits like Lineker. It shows the world what he is capable of producing, and that no stage is too daunting for the 19-year-old.

Even when heavily outnumbered, Saka has been able to find ways to create chances for England this summer. He’s worked hard to support Kyle Walker defensively, as well, and is yet to show the versatility Lineker admires.

Southgate has exclusively fielded Saka on England’s right-wing, but Arsenal know he can play anywhere on the left or right. He makes an impact from any position, as well, and will soon force the Gunners to consider a new contract.

The teenager only penned a new long-term deal last year placing him under contract to 2024. But, despite Arsenal increasing his salary tenfold, Saka still only earns £30,000-per-week at the Emirates Stadium. A bargain for a player of his sheer quality and potential.
