Speaking on BT Sport’s post-match coverage of Liverpool vs Atalanta (25/11/20 8PM kick-off), both Rio Ferdinand and Gary Lineker named Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish as a player who is similar to Papu Gomez.

Gomez caused Liverpool all sorts of problems all night, and the two pundits were quick to wax-lyrical about the Argentine.

“This is the type of player that I feel we’ve lacked in England for many years,” Ferdinand said about Gomez.

“We don’t have the player, that gets your team times on the ball, gives your team breathers, takes the ball for three or four seconds.”

Lineker then interjected stating that England have some young players capable of being that player.

“One or two of the younger ones have got the potential to do that, Phil Foden.”

Then, both Lineker and Ferdinand seemed to come to the same realisation in tandem, as they both stated that Jack Grealish is the type of player they’re describing.

“Grealish,” Both Lineker and Ferdinand exclaimed

“Grealish keeps the ball comfortably.” Lineker added.

It’s an absolute testament to how good Grealish is that he’s getting a mention on a Champions League broadcast of Liverpool vs Atalanta.

This young midfielder is making such an impact on the English game that Linker and Ferdinand couldn’t help but draw comparisons to him when watching two elite sides.

Gomez is a top talent as well, previously being compared to Lionel Messi, so this is praise of the highest order from the two pundits.

Of course, it remains to be seen if Grealish can have the impact Gomez has had on the European scene, but the fact that he’s drawing these comparisons shows just how good he is.
