Arsenal vs Barcelona 2006 has began to trend after the Spanish giants were charged with corruption over payments to referees.
A major scandal is emerging out of the Camp Nou as Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira – the former Vice President of Spanish football’s refereeing committee – also faces charges, with many Arsenal fans keen to know if the 2006 Champions League final was tampered with.
So, what is the likelihood of Arsenal now being awarded the 2006 Champions League? Let’s take a look…
Arsenal vs Barcelona 2006
Well, it remains to be seen what happens, but it is certainly possible based on past events of a similar nature.
Some of you may remember a scandal named Calciopoli involving Juventus and AC Milan.
Juventus were stripped of their 2005/06 Serie A title after being found guilty of attempting to influence results by handpicking specific referees, with AC Milan and three other Italian sides involved as well.
AC Milan finished second that season, although given the fact they were found guilty of tampering with results as well, the Serie A title was awarded to Inter Milan – who finished third in the 2005/06 Serie A campaign.
Therefore, if Barcelona are found to have made payments to officials involved in the 2006 Champions League final, it is certainly possible that they will have their name stripped from the trophy, and Arsenal named winners instead.
The Athletic – a hugely reliable news outlet – wrote the following in their story on Friday.
“News emerged in mid-February that prosecutors were investigating payments made by Barca to DASNIL 95, a company owned by Enriquez Negreira, between 2001 and 2018.”

As you can see, the 2006 Champions League final obviously falls within that timeframe.
Therefore, if Barcelona are found guilty of their corruption charge, they could potentially lose a huge amount of trophies, not just the 2006 Champions League.
