Levi Colwill’s absence has been hard to ignore during the 2025/26 campaign, with Chelsea noticeably lacking his composure and defensive presence. There’s still no clear timeline for when he’ll be back on the pitch.
Colwill suffered an ACL injury on the very first day of pre-season training, having only been given a short break following a busy summer.
Chelsea’s Club World Cup involvement, which ended in victory, left them with little time to recover. Injuries have since affected several key players, including Cole Palmer, Romeo Lavia and Liam Delap.
Liam Rosenior hoping Levi Colwill can still play a role for Chelsea this season

Since taking over as manager, Liam Rosenior hasn’t had the chance to use the England international and it’s affected his ability to establish a consistent back two.
Bobby Vincent asked Rosenior if Colwill might play for Chelsea this season, and the manager expressed hope that he would.
He said: “I’m hopeful. I’m hopeful because he’s an outstanding player. Again, no time frames. You have to take these long-term injuries day by day. And also, it’s not about when he comes back, it’s about him staying fit when he is back.”
Chelsea have had a history of bringing players back too quickly from injuries, something many point to as a reason behind Reece James and Lavia’s repeated issues.
Colwill is also in talks over a new contract at Chelsea, which only adds to his motivation to get back on the pitch as soon as possible.
Chelsea still assessing centre-back market
Chelsea made it their mission to sign a new centre-back in January, with their efforts to bring in Jeremy Jacquet not successful.
Despite recalling Mamadou Sarr and having the impending return of Aaron Anselmino, reports have not disappeared that they would be interested in signing a new centre-back.
The club are seemingly looking at all options at present though before committing once again.
