After spending the last three years focused on building a young squad, Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali now appear to be open to bringing in more experienced players this summer.
Chelsea had a quiet January window, failing to land any first-team signings, despite being linked with several players.
Jeremy Jacquet was reportedly close to joining but ultimately chose Liverpool, leaving Chelsea empty-handed in that pursuit.
The club also considered adding a central midfielder, but Douglas Luiz ended up at Aston Villa, and Romeo Lavia was trusted to fill the gap instead.
In that context, it now appears the Chelsea hierarchy are adjusting their approach somewhat.
Chelsea open to signing experienced players now
TeamTalk reports that Chelsea are now more ‘open-minded’ about bringing in experienced players.
Dean Jones weighed in on the situation, saying: “I do get the impression Chelsea are more open-minded than when they were previously only looking at younger players. There is definitely a chance they look to sign someone with more experience and seniority.
“But at the moment, I am told the Kim links are just one of a number of deals they have on their mind for the summer, and ultimately they will still be looking for good value.”
Why Chelsea’s squad balance has been under the spotlight
Chelsea have often been criticised for lacking experienced voices, especially in key moments. Under Liam Rosenior, there were games like the Carabao Cup tie against Arsenal where they could have used a player to steady things and set the tone.
Jamie Redknapp suggested that Chelsea need a rare type of player, someone with leadership qualities similar to what Thiago Silva brought. Finding someone like John Terry is not realistic anymore.
Redknapp’s point stands. Even though his time at the club was not long, Silva had a bigger influence than many expected. Beyond his performances, he brought leadership in critical moments and helped the club win several trophies during his spell.
