Chelsea’s strong Premier League run continued with a comfortable win over struggling Wolves in the Midlands.

Cole Palmer’s hat-trick, which set a new record, put the Blues firmly in control.

Liam Rosenior took him off early in the second half to keep him fresh, especially with another game coming up against Crystal Palace later in the week.

Injuries have started to mount quietly for Chelsea lately, and club captain Reece James missed out again after also being absent against Arsenal.

Rosenior had hoped James would be back for this one, but it was Malo Gusto and Josh Acheampong who featured instead.

Given how much time he has already missed over the past couple of seasons, there is always a bit of concern whenever James drops out of the squad for more than one game.

But Rosenior has eased those worries, telling Football London that the full-back is not dealing with anything serious and could be back in time to face Leeds on Tuesday night.

“He’s so close. He should be fit for Tuesday. It’s not a major problem at all. It’s a knock. Pain management issue. He was out running yesterday,” said the English manager.

Rosenior made the right call by not rushing James back, and he was fortunate that Wolves did not put them in a position where they had to consider it.

Reece James hitting top form

With more time on the pitch, the 26-year-old has rediscovered his best form this season and is once again being mentioned among the top players in his position.

Antoine Semenyo included James in his Team of the Season for 2025/26 so far, choosing him over options like Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber.

It seems likely that, barring any major setbacks, James will be the right-back Thomas Tuchel turns to for England’s 2026 World Cup campaign as well.

The Blues have strong alternatives available but will always prefer to have their captain’s quality and leadership on the pitch whenever possible.
