Andros Townsend has claimed that Tottenham possibly signing, Middlesbrough defender Djed Spence, this summer is the ‘key one’ for the club and especially Daniel Levy, as he told talkSPORT on Monday morning.

The Everton winger claimed that this rumoured deal for Spence is one that Levy would previously ‘drag out until deadline day’, but if Spurs get the transfer completed within the next few weeks, then it will show that Antonio Conte is being backed.

In the past, Levy has loved a number of big transfer dealings on deadline day, but so far this summer, they already have three new faces through the doors.

Two of them were free transfers in Fraser Forster and Ivan Perisic, but Yves Bissouma did arrive for £25 million, a fee that even surprised former Premier League striker, Chris Sutton.

Nonetheless, with talk that the Champions League side have now turned their attention to Spence, who won promotion whilst on-loan at Nottingham Forest last season, this is how Townsend reacted.

“Djed Spence is the key one,” said Townsend. “In the past, this would be the transfer fee that Daniel Levy would drag out until deadline day.

“I think it’s been reported that Spurs are way off Middlesbrough’s valuation, so this is the one if he really wants to back Conte. If he really has changed and gets this done within the next few weeks, then give Conte his man for the whole of pre-season.”

LEVY TAKING OVER

Well, it seems as though as talks for Spence drag on, Levy has taken over and is trying to usher the deal through as quickly as possible.

In truth, it isn’t an issue yet because pre-season is still a number of weeks away, but if the north London club can get this deal done sooner rather than later, then it’s another positive step.

Only 12 months ago, Tottenham were in a right mess, they had sacked Jose Mourinho one week before a League Cup final, then put Ryan Mason in charge, before handing the keys to Nuno Espirito Santo, who wasn’t even the first choice.

Then, their star striker, Harry Kane, turned up late for pre-season, or so it seemed, which caused a bit of a stir given that Manchester City were keen to sign him.

But it’s a lot different now and it just shows the difference Conte has made to the club since replacing Nuno at Hotspur Way.
