Leon Goretzka has explained how comments from Donald Trump have created an unexpected source of motivation for Germany ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Leon Goretzka and the German national team are preparing for a World Cup that will be staged across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The build-up to the tournament has included political discussion alongside football matters, given the current affairs in the United States.

Leon Goretzka addresses political backdrop to 2026 World Cup

Leon Goretzka spoke about the political environment surrounding the upcoming World Cup during an interview with German outlet Die Zeit.

The Bayern Munich midfielder acknowledged awareness of the debates involving the host nations, especially the United States.

“Of course, I’m aware of the political debates. I still expect it to be a great tournament; it will promote football there, and show many people want an incredibly exciting game.”

Goretzka said the squad remains focused on football and the opportunity the tournament presents for them.

Donald Trump comments give Germany added motivation

Leon Goretzka also referenced remarks made by Donald Trump when discussing how the political climate has been received within the Germany camp.

He said the rhetoric has strengthened the team’s sense of collective identity. The comments illustrate how external factors have shaped Germany’s mindset ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

“Donald Trump makes us feel not only German but also European.”

The German national team are World Cup royalty, having won four World Cups, with their most recent win coming in 2014 in Brazil.

However, since their 2014 win, the Germans have failed to make it out of the group stage each time, marking their worst run of form in consecutive tournaments ever.
