Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has said the White House must play a role in reassuring international supporters ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

Karen Bass spoke as questions persist over whether immigration policies introduced by U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration could affect fan travel.

Los Angeles is scheduled to host eight World Cup matches during June and July, and is considered a key destination for global fans.

Karen Bass urges White House to reassure World Cup visitors

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said she would continue sending a message that international fans are welcome in her city.

She added that similar reassurance must come from the federal government, especially from President Donald Trump himself.

“I am sure (Trump) is not going to interfere with that but I do think that message has to come from the White House as well.”

Bass said local messaging alone would not be sufficient to address concerns, especially with several fans coming in from other countries.

Immigration concerns raised despite strong ticket demand

FIFA has reported record ticket demand from around the world for the World Cup. However, concerns remain that strict immigration policies introduced by the Trump administration could still impact travel plans.

Bass said clear communication from the White House would be central to maintaining confidence ahead of the tournament.

“They are the ones that need to send that message. I will send the message that people are welcome to the city of Los Angeles.”

With the FIFA World Cup set to kick off on June 11th in the United States, there is concern that the tournament might be impacted by the civil unrest and policies implemented within the country.
