The Sunday Mirror (03/07, p76) report that Leicester now want to sign PSV Eindhoven wide and Cody Gakpo.
The problem is that Gakpo is allegedly holding out for a move to a top-six Premier League club.
Whether that interest emerges remains to be seen, with moves to Arsenal and Tottenham seemingly fading away.
Rodgers hopes to lure Gakpo to Leicester by promising him a big first-team role – something that may not be on offer at a perceivably ‘bigger’ club.
The World Cup is on the horizon now and Gakpo won’t want to risk his place in the Netherlands national team.
That means Leicester may have hope, and it’s the exact same strategy Leeds United seem to be chasing with Gakpo.
Leeds are looking towards Gakpo as a potential signing if Raphinha moves on this summer.
Reports in the Netherlands suggest that Gakpo would cost around £33million and Leeds hope to tempt him with the promise of first-team football.
Leicester have more realistic European ambitions right now but Leeds are a huge club, giving them a chance of battling for Gakpo’s signature.
Gakpo, 23, hit 21 goals and 15 assists for PSV last season, enjoying a simply outstanding season over in the Netherlands.
The Dutchman seems ready for a big move away and whilst he has his sights set very high, Leeds and Leicester seemingly have some hope.
