Sheffield Wednesday are set to sign Vitoria Setubal centre-back Frederico Venancio, with the Portuguese club confirming via their official website that the captain is signing for the Owls
Remarkably Sheffield Wednesday are set to make the signing as a loan move, making it a real coup for Carlos Carvalhal’s side.
The capture is potentially a big win for Wednesday – and also a missed opportunity for Championship rivals Leeds United.
Leeds were linked with Venancio earlier this summer, with HITC reporting via The Sun’s print edition that they were interested in the centre-back.
Venancio, 24, has leadership qualities and has racked up more than 130 appearances for Setubal so far in his career.
Leeds have since failed to add a centre-back despite recruiting well in other areas.
They are stretched defensively, having to rely on 20-year-old Conor Shaughnessy to make the step up to the first team for the first time.
Sheffield Wednesday’s move for Venancio on loan is a deal Leeds should be regretting not making. Fans will hope they have a similarly impressive move up their sleeve before the transfer window closes.
