Hugo Diaz has joined Gimnastica Segoviana in Spain’s fourth tier after once being tipped for a big future at Leeds United.
The Whites have been prolific in terms of signing young players to develop for the youth team.
Pascal Struijk has been a major success story from that approach, whilst Joe Gelhardt, Lewis Bate, Sam Greenwood and Crysencio Summerville have bright futures.
Not everybody can make it at Elland Road though and one former Leeds talent has now made another move.
Ex-Leeds talent Hugo Diaz has joined Gimnastica Segoviana
When Victor Orta took over as Leeds’ director of football in 2017, the influx of youngsters was quite staggering.
In came names like Madger Gomes, Bryce Hosannah, Adrian Balboa, Oriol Rey, Ousama Siddiki and Kun Temenuzhkov.
None of them became first-team players at Leeds though and the same goes for utility man Hugo Diaz.
Diaz joined Leeds from the Deportivo La Coruna ranks in August 2017, leaving his hometown club for a move to England.
The Spaniard was signed as one for the future but ended up playing a first-team game back in 2018.
With Leeds facing a defensive injury crisis, Diaz was on the bench to face Preston North End and ended up making his debut.
It looked like Diaz was set for a bright future at Leeds, with fans taking to Twitter in 2019 to suggest that he was ‘quality’ and ‘brilliant’.
Yet just a matter of weeks later, Diaz was released by Leeds and returned to Spain with Getafe, joining their B team.
A move to Poland materialised in 2020 as Diaz joined Korona Kielce, and then he returned to Spain last year with Salamanca and then Bergantinos.
Diaz has now confirmed his newest club on Instagram, confirming that he has joined Gimnastica Segoviana.
Diaz even made his debut for the club on Sunday, starting his career with Segoviana with a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid B.
Segoviana play in the fourth tier of Spanish football and Diaz – now 25 – will be hoping to realise some of that potential he showed at Leeds whilst making his way up the Spanish pyramid.
Players develop at different rates and this could be the move to get Diaz on track again having shown promise with Leeds.
