Leeds United wanted Alberth Elis over the summer but his form in France’s second tier means they may be relieved to have not signed him.

The Whites were understandably in the market for attacking additions over the summer.

Raphinha moved on to Barcelona and Patrick Bamford’s injury problems meant Jesse Marsch needed more firepower.

Luis Sinisterra arrived from Feyenoord before Leeds struck what now looks to be a superb deal for Zurich attacker Wilfried Gnonto.

A number of names came and went over the summer though; the likes of Charles De Ketelaere, Arnaud Kalimuendo and Mergim Berisha spring to mind.

Then there is Alberth Elis, whose form has completely deserted him since Leeds were interested.

Leeds summer target Elis struggling for goals

Elis may have been familiar to Leeds boss Marsch having previously excelled in the United States with Houston Dynamo.

The Honduran attacker spent last season on loan at Bordeaux from Boavista and bagged nine goals in 20 games.

That’s a pretty decent record but it wasn’t enough to stop Bordeaux from suffering relegation to Ligue 2.

French newspaper L’Equipe reported in June that Leeds were keen on luring Elis to Elland Road after Bordeaux’s struggles.

The summer passed without Elis leaving Bordeaux but if he thought Ligue 2 would be a walk in the park, he is being proven very wrong.

Elis has scored just once in 13 league games this season and has been in and out of the side under David Guion.

Elis would have expected much better but it just isn’t clicking for him this season.

Bordeaux president Gerard Lopez has suggested that Elis was left disappointed at not getting a summer move and that has maybe set him back.

Lopez kept the door open for a January move away, with his situation of Elis struggling not helping anybody.

It feels a little unlikely that Leeds will be back in for Elis now, and maybe a return to Major League Soccer will be on the cards.
