Leeds are said to be interested in signing Noa Lang this January – a player who is currently away with the Netherlands on World Cup duty.
It was Voetbal Nieuws who revealed that Jesse Marsch is tracking the 23-year-old, who The Athletic believe Marcelo Bielsa refused to bring to Elland Road during his time in charge.
What’s the story?
Well, Lang has now somewhat been compared to Lionel Messi by Louis van Gaal in the Netherlands camp.
The 71-year-old has been preparing for World Cup clashes by setting up 11 vs 11 matches in training, with the 11 not expected to start asked to replicate how the opposition will play.
Interestingly, when asked who he chose to play the role of Messi, ahead of tonight’s World Cup Quarter-Final clash between the Netherlands and Argentina, Van Gaal revealed Lang was tasked with replicating the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner.

As quoted by NOS, Van Gaal said: “That was Noa Lang. And he also found it logical that he was the one who had to play as Messi.”
It is not the first time that Lang has been compared to one of the very best on the planet.
Pierre Van Hooijdonk has previously likened the Leeds target to Robin van Persie, while his agent – Bart Baving – said that the Club Brugge No.10 plays like Neymar.
Richard Witschge – Lang’s old coach at Ajax – also made the very bold statement of comparing the skilful forward to Zinedine Zidane, when speaking on the Warming Up podcast.
Leeds must be wary of Noa Lang
As aforesaid, Bielsa was not keen on signing Lang, mainly due to concerns over his work rate and attitude.
There is absolutely no denying the Netherlands international has talent, but seeing as Marsch also focuses heavily on a strong work ethic and team spirit – like Bielsa – the American should be wary of going against the Argentine’s verdict.
Leeds certainly need a new forward, so we can understand why Lang is on the shortlist at Elland Road.
However, Marsch and Victor Orta must do their due diligence on the Dutchman, and assess whether he is the right character after Bielsa rejected the chance to sign him.
