Leeds and Rodrigo De Paul were involved in one of the most dramatic transfer sagas of the summer back in 2020.

The Argentina international – playing for Udinese at the time – was the subject of talks between Leeds and the Serie A outfit, with the South American even tweeting that he would like to come to Elland Road before deleting his Twitter account.

Angus Kinnear also discussed the pursuit on The Square Ball Podcast, claiming that De Paul was interested in joining Leeds, although Victor Orta revealed that the Whites simply could not afford it.

Now, however, Leeds have a fantastic chance to sign the 28-year-old.

Rodrigo De Paul available for Leeds

Well, the Argentine eventually joined Atlético Madrid, although a shock development at the Wanda Metropolitano means sales are now required.

The Spanish side surprisingly finished bottom of Group B in the Champions League, with those who oversee the budgets for Atlético Madrid not taking that into account financially at the start of the season.

In fairness, Atlético Madrid are often highly competitive in Europe, so it is certainly a shock.

Now – according to Cadena SER – Joao Felix, Thomas Lemar, Yannick Carrasco and De Paul are up for sale, with Diego Simeone’s side in need of cash.

Therefore – if Leeds are still interested, of course – Orta has a golden opportunity to finally bring the South American to Elland Road.

Leeds need a striker more than Rodrigo De Paul

As romantic as it would be to finally sign De Paul, we believe Leeds should prioritise a striker.

Patrick Bamford is struggling for both fitness and form this season, failing to score in ten Premier League appearances so far this term.

Rodrigo has performed well, while Wilfried Gnonto looks to be a real prospect, but Leeds have to find a reliable, consistent frontman.

Hopefully, they can afford to sign a striker as well as De Paul, but if there is only enough money for one, then a No.9 should definitely take priority.
