Speaking on The Square Ball Podcast, Angus Kinnear has shared that he knew Rodrigo De Paul actually wanted to join Leeds United this summer.
The Argentine was linked with a move to Elland Road for the longest time in the last transfer window, and there were plenty of cryptic messages on Twitter that suggested he was open to a move.
The Square Ball were at the heart of the speculation in the summer, tweeting about De Paul every day, and they asked Kinnear what he thought about the Argentine’s activity on social media, including that infamous reported deleted tweet.
“It’s an odd one, because it’s an odd way to do that. To be fair, we knew at that stage that he had an interest, but all other elements of the deal didn’t work, so we’d kind of written it off.
“So, it wasn’t a surprise, but it’s odd for a player to declare his interest without having some degree of surety that something is going to happen.”

It seems as though De Paul was more keen to join Leeds than the Whites were to sign him.
The Argentine didn’t do a very good job at hiding his interest in joining Leeds this summer, but the fact that his tweet about the situation was very quickly deleted, hinted that his social media antics weren’t exactly reliable.
However, it seems as though the £35m-rated midfielder was actually keen on a move to West Yorkshire, but for the Whites, the deal just didn’t work, and at that price tag, you can understand why.
With Udinese currently struggling in Serie A, that valuation may drop sooner rather than later, and with De Paul reportedly keen to join Marcelo Bielsa’s side, this may be a deal that is revisited in the future.
