Leeds want ‘explosive’ attacker, his cash-strapped club have now been demoted amid financial woe

Leeds want Alberth Elis and their pursuit has received a shock development after Bordeaux were demoted to the third tier of French football.

The Whites have secured two signings this summer in Brenden Aaronson and Rasmus Kristensen but there are plenty more to come.

Bayern Munich midfielder Marc Roca looks set to join Leeds whilst a bid has gone in for Paris Saint-Germain striker Arnaud Kalimuendo.

There have been linked to other strikers as well, such Valentin Castellanos and Boavista-owned attacker Elis.

Leeds want Alberth Elis

L’Equipe reported last week that Leeds were showing a strong interest in signing Honduras international Elis this summer.

Elis used to play for Houston Dynamo over in Major League Soccer and former New York Red Bulls boss Jesse Marsch will now all about him.

Elis can play up front or out wide and is known for his ‘explosive’ pace but his future is now up in the air.

That L’Equipe report noted that Bordeaux would activate their permanent option on Boavista loanee Elis before selling him for profit.

Bordeaux announced last week that they had activated that clause, claiming that they were ‘very happy’ to be keeping hold of Elis.

However, Bordeaux have been left rocked after they were demoted to the third tier of French football.

Get French Football noted that France’s football financial watchdog, the DNCG, have decided to send Bordeaux down another division after their relegation from Ligue 1.

Bordeaux will appeal but the club is €40million (£34million) in the red.

So what does that mean for Elis?

Bordeaux have been allowed to pull off that permanent deal despite their financial woes and this situation could actually work in Leeds’ favour.

There is no way Elis will want to play in the third tier of France next season, especially if a Premier League move to Leeds United is on the table.

Bordeaux will also be so desperate for cash that Leeds my be able to use that to their advantage and secure Elis for cheaper than planned.

This certainly seems like a boost for Leeds, with the only possible problem being that Bordeaux’s appeal may make a transfer drag on.
