LeBron James has made his decision, joining the Philadelphia 76ers for the 2026-27 NBA season despite multiple elite options at his disposal.
James selected the 76ers from a four-team shortlist including previous stops such as the Cavaliers and Heat, alongside his old rivals on the Warriors.
With the final decision leaning towards the 76ers, multiple fans and experts are looking to ascertain what motivated James to select the 76ers.
LeBron James only considered the 76ers after the Jaylen Brown trade
James’ agent, Rich Paul, revealed on the latest episode of his podcast ‘Game Over’ with Max Kellerman that LeBron’s decision was ultimately tipped by the 76ers’ acquisition of Jaylen Brown.
“Back of house everywhere was great… The eyeball came after the Jaylen Brown trade to even be considered.”
Ultimately, the 76ers won out as the best choice for James to compete for a championship next season.
The 76ers head into the 2026-27 season with a loaded starting five with Brown, LeBron, Tyrese Maxey, V.J. Edgecombe, and Joel Embiid.
James has had a relationship with 76ers GM Mike Gansey since they were high school rivals in Ohio, but Paul himself admitted that the front office wasn’t the deciding factor since all four finalists had excellent front offices that LeBron trusts.
The Brown trade tipped the scales, ultimately helping the 76ers land the biggest free agent signing in the legendary franchise’s history.

The 76ers not only have one of the best starting fives in the NBA, but they also have a competent rotation with the likes of Anfernee Simons, Dean Wade, Adem Bona, Justin Edwards, LaBaron Philon Jr., and Dominick Barlow, among others, on the bench.
The Cavaliers would have stylistic problems with James as a small forward with two post-centric players and a ball-heavy point guard like James Harden.
The Heat have one of the worst guard cores in the NBA right now, largely due to their trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo, which leaves a Big 3 of James, Giannis, and Bam Adebayo lacking on the perimeter.
The Warriors’ only appeal was teaming up with Steph Curry, as the roster was easily the worst existing team that James could’ve joined.
The 76ers were the clear best win-now option for James, and that’s what he ultimately went with.
