The Benfica right-back Tomas Tavares will not be joining his teammates Gedson Fernandes and Carlos Vinicius at Tottenham Hotspur this season.

The Sunday Mirror claimed in August that Tottenham had been scouting Tavares ahead of a possible deal for the player valued at £9 million.

By that point, Spurs had already loaned in Fernandes – the teenager’s Portugal Under-21 colleague – and have since done the same with Vinicius.

But Tavares has instead signed a season-long temporary deal with Deportivo Alaves.

Tottenham have already strengthened in Tavares’s position this summer, recruiting Matt Doherty from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

But with no guarantees Serge Aurier will remain a Spurs player beyond Monday’s transfer deadline, another right-back may have featured on the agenda of Jose Mourinho.

Tottenham are reported to have prioritised the signing of a new centre-half this month.

Premier League clubs have until 11pm tomorrow to conclude transfers with overseas sides, but can still trade until 16 October with those in the English Football League.
