The former Ibrox favourite thinks strikers at Rangers should always be on penalty duties.

James Tavernier of Rangers shoots from a penalty and misses during the Scottish Cup 5th Round match between Kilmarnock and Rangers at Rugby Park on February 9, 2019 in Kilmarnock, Scotland.

Former Rangers forward Kris Boyd has called on Ibrox strikers Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe to take responsibility for scoring penalties, The Scottish Sun report.

There are question marks surrounding James Tavernier’s ability to fulfil the duties for Steven Gerrard’s side after missing his third spot-kick of the season on Sunday.

The Ibrox boss has admitted he is considering whether or not to continue with his captain from 12 yards.

For Boyd, the duty should always fall to a striker, simply to boost goalscoring numbers if nothing else.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, the pundit said: “I’ll never understand why strikers don’t take penalties. It’s a free shot.

“If you are going to get to the target you set yourself as a striker at the start of a season, you always looked at between five and eight penalties being part of that.

“I would always have my striker taking the penalties. But they need to step forward and accept the pressure.”

What should Gerrard do?

To take the pressure off of James Tavernier’s shoulders, Gerrard should make the call to give penalty duty to someone else. Whether that’s Jermain Defoe, Alfredo Morelos or another, it’s clear that the club captain isn’t quite coping with the responsibility.

He was pretty deadly from the spot last season, scoring 14 penalties in 16 attempts. It’s likely one day he will even be the man to step up regularly again. There’s just too much spotlight on him right now though.

Missing three in five attempts this term isn’t good enough with points so crucial to Rangers’ trophy chase.

Assistant manager Gary McAllister refused to tell reporters who will take penalties moving forward on Tuesday, but has suggested the issue has been broached behind the scenes at Auchenhowie (The Daily Record).

It’ll be interesting to see what happens the next time a referee whistles in favour of the Gers.
