The Ibrox boss is set to make a decision on whether the Rangers captain will continue on spot-kicks.

Glasgow Rangers' English defender James Tavernier misses this penalty kick during the UEFA Europa League Group G football match between Rangers and Feyenoord at Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow,...

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard will consider whether to take James Tavernier off penalty duties over the next 24 hours, The Scottish Sun report.

The Ibrox skipper missed his third penalty of the season so far against Motherwell on Sunday. It’s an error that could have proved costly, with Rangers leaving it late to secure a winner and pick up all three points.

Tavernier is usually confident from 12 yards, but this season isn’t quite meeting the standards he’s set in campaigns past.

Gerrard recognises it’s a problem and is now to set to re-evalute who should step up to take the big chances.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said: “I will consider taking James off pens.

“I don’t think I have to make that decision right now but it will certainly be on my mind over the next 24 to 48 hours.

“I don’t think you can doubt James’ character. He knows that in the last couple of weeks, he’s in the firing line.”

What should Gerrard do?

The Rangers manager obviously has a desire to back one of his most important players but in this instance he must go with a different option.

There are already question marks within the the Gers support about Tavernier’s general form. If the player is suffering from confidence as a result of that then it makes perfect to have another player take on responsibility in the big moments.

Right now the current situation is working and the Ibrox boss must show leadership and make a decision that benefits the team as a whole.
