Speaking on part two of his appearance on The Beautiful Game Podcast, Daniel Sturridge has claimed that Tottenham’s Harry Kane is reminding him of Roberto Firmino after dropping into a more deep-lying role this season for Tottenham.

Firmino has long been the master of playing deep as a striker, creating chances for the wingers alongside him, but Kane is well on his way to taking his crown, crafting no fewer than 10 assists already this season.

Sturridge pointed out the similarities between Kane and Firmino.

“You see Spurs playing a different style of football now, more counter-attacking. Harry Kane playing a little bit deeper,” Sturridge said.

“I think the way they’re attacking is almost similar to Liverpool’s style, in the way they’re trying to play the game now, and it’s helping them be successful, and they’re playing counter-attacking.

“Son’s running in behind, Bergwijn’s running in behind and Gareth Bale’s running in behind. Kane’s kind of like Firmino now in how he’s dropping deeper, Kane would traditionally be playing on the shoulder.”

The Kane and Firmino comparison is certainly an interesting one.

Sturridge obviously knows exactly how Firmino and Kane play having worked alongside them for both Liverpool and England, so he has a more expert view on this, but there is one striking difference between the pair, in that Kane is more of a consistent goal threat, even in his new role.

This isn’t a knock on Firmino, but Kane does score and assist at a much greater rate, and you have to say that he’s been the better player this season.

Kane is certainly brilliant at dropping deep, with Micah Richards recently claiming that he could even be a midfield player.

With Tottenham playing against Liverpool on Wednesday evening, it may be worth keeping an eye on how both players perform and judging the similarities between their roles.
