Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, Micah Richards has suggested that Tottenham star Harry Kane could play in a brand new position.

The BBC Pundit said that Kane’s ability and quality when dropping deeper this season has made him think that he’s capable of playing as a midfielder, which is certainly an interesting prospect not only for Tottenham, but for the England team.

“We know Mourinho’s style, he did similar at Chelsea as well, and he did similar at Chelsea,” Richards said.

“These are clever players and at the top level you get punished. Kane’s dropping so deep now like, sometimes I’m thinking like he actually could play a midfield role, I mean his passing has got so much better.”

The idea of Kane playing in the midfield has been discussed in the past, but we’re still yet to see him play in the middle of the park, with Transfermarkt saying that he’s never ever played in as a number 10 or a centre-mid.

However, as the saying goes, if it aint broke, don’t fix it.

Kane is arguably having the best season we’ve ever seen from him with 18 goal contributions in his first 11 games of the season, so why would you want to change that?

Of course, Richards isn’t saying that Mourinho should play him in midfield, as much as he is saying that he is good enough to play that role, but we may see that happen one day.

As Kane ages and his mobility reduces, his technical qualities may allow him to prolong his career as a midfielder, much like how Wayne Rooney has changed roles towards the end of his career.
