Former three-time NBA champion Kevon Looney joined the LA Lakers because he sees Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves like he did Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

The Lakers have upgraded their depth at the center position massively compared to last season. They’ve now gone from having Deandre Ayton and Jaxson Hayes to Walker Kessler and Kevon Looney.

Looney brings veteran championship experience at the position, having won three championships with the Golden State Warriors. And his experience with the team played a part in him joining.

Kevon Looney believes he can ‘free up’ Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves like Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson

Speaking on NBA Today, ESPN reporter Dave McMenamin explained the motivation behind Kevon Looney’s decision to join the LA Lakers.

Looney believes he can play a role in helping Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, much like he did with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson during the Golden State Warriors’ championship race.

“They needed a backup center. He had some opportunities around the league. I spoke to someone close to him today who said that he saw it as a clear opportunity.

“He saw a parallel between some of the half-court sets that they’re going to run. The way he can free up Luka and AR the same way he freed up Klay and Steph with screens. Multi-time champion.

“Then, let’s talk about off the court. He’s a UCLA guy; he spends his off-seasons in LA. He’s getting married this weekend to his bride, who was also a hooper at Cal State.

“It’s a happy time for the Looney family. I’ve spent time around Kevon; he’s a good guy to have among this group as a veteran leader.”

Kevon Looney is an underrated signing for the LA Lakers

LA Lakers president Rob Pelinka has been widely criticised for the free agent signings he made this season, with many fans saying these moves don’t move the needle.

While Walker Kessler brings some much-needed quality at the center position, the Lakers lost key players like LeBron James, Marcus Smart, Rui Hachimura, and Luke Kennard without replacing them adequately.

But few fans have been critical of the decision to sign Kevon Looney. Landing a veteran center with championship experience on a good contract is hugely valuable.

Looney could be a difference maker for the LA Lakers, especially come playoff time when things become even more difficult.
