LeBron James is leaving the LA Lakers and his real reason for choosing to do so has now emerged.

After eight seasons with the LA Lakers, LeBron James is moving on. The Lakers confirmed his departure with a post on X, with LeBron thanking the franchise.

James won one championship during his time in purple and gold, but this was a disappointing return for a player who dreamed of bringing back a dynasty to the legendary franchise.

The superstar’s real reason for leaving LA has now been revealed, and it shows his frustration with how recent seasons have panned out.

LeBron James wants to be competitive

ESPN reporter and Lakers insider Dave McMenamin reports that LeBron James has taken the decision to leave because he wants to play ‘meaningful, competitive basketball’.

He posted on X: “After taking time to decompress and undergo some self-assessment, LeBron James came to the conclusion that he wanted to continue playing “meaningful, competitive basketball,” a source familiar with James’ thinking told ESPN.”

This is a brutal reality check for the Lakers, who were swept 4-0 by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Semifinals.

The previous year the Lakers were defeated 4-1 by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the opening playoff round.

The Lakers have not even returned to the NBA Finals since they won the championship in 2019/20, a title derided by many.

They reached the Conference Finals in 2023, only to get swept 4-0 by the Denver Nuggets.

It was made clear last offseason that the Lakers were no longer planning around LeBron. They were building around newly acquired superstar Luka Doncic.

The franchise’s attempts to build a competitive roster were made difficult by LeBron’s salary, and they have just paid out to keep Austin Reaves.

While they could have afforded to bring LeBron James back, there was just not a path to build a title-challenging roster around their star trio. They can accomplish this better without him, and are now weighing up targets.

So LeBron has walked, aiming to now assess his options where he can play ‘meaningful, competitive basketball’ elsewhere.

Open to offers

LeBron James is heavily tipped to join former rivals the Golden State Warriors. Or he could rejoin the Cleveland Cavaliers for a third time.

Don’t rule out a reunion with Pat Riley on the Miami Heat. The word going around the league right now is that LeBron is open to offers.

If a team can sell to him that there is an opening, where he can genuinely win an elusive fifth championship, he could take it.
