Kenny Miller has told his Record column that signing Ryan Porteous is a “no-brainer” come the January transfer window – amid reports that the Gers are considering a move to lure him to Ibrox as Michael Beale’s first signing.

Porteous, 23, is out of contract at Hibernian at the end of the season. It means the one-time Scotland international is likely to leave on a free – but could also be sold in January if Hibs choose to cash in. Jim Duffy has the inside track.

The Clyde manager spoke to Clyde Superscoreboard last week – saying Rangers want to sign Porteous next month. Indeed, he also claims that Porteous could be bought for just £500,000 in January, if Rangers want him right now.

Rangers icon Miller picked up on the links and thinks it is an easy decision to sign Porteous on a free. But the Ibrox icon says Porteous must eradicate some of the hot-headedness he has shown at Hibs, if he is to make it at Rangers.

“Rangers signing Ryan Porteous from Hibs on a free transfer should be a no-brainer,” Miller said – when asked if Rangers should bring the centre-back to Ibrox. “If it’s purely a football decision, it’s not a bad idea at all.

“But for him to make it in Glasgow and realise his full potential at Ibrox he’ll need to cut out some of the stupid antics he’s shown at Easter Road. Listen, the boy can play. He’s got character and a personality. At big clubs, you need that.”

Miller: Rangers signing Porteous is a no-brainer

If there is a position in the side that needs improving ahead of January, it is centre-back. Injuries to Connor Goldson, Filip Helander and John Souttar have left them exposed. James Sands, Leon King and Ben Davies are the options.

King is still young and learning his trade. Sands has not shown why he was brought to the club and Davies is still a new signing, really. Goldson and Souttar are excellent defenders – while Helander could be somewhat past it at this stage.

So, while they have numbers, they need better. Porteous is young, but experienced. He knows Scottish football very well. Rangers need him as Miller says – but it depends if they can get him in January or not. Can they wait?
