Kenny Miller has told Sky Sports that there would be “no surprises” if Rangers choose to bring Michael Beale back to the club just over a year after he left following Steven Gerrard’s decision to move to Aston Villa from Ibrox in 2021.
Rangers chose to end van Bronckhorst’s time at Ibrox, having returned to the club following his stint as a player. He got off to a superb start, taking Rangers to the Europa League final. Second in the League, but Scottish Cup winners.
But this season, it has been poor. A whole host of injuries and some poor recruitment in the summer has hampered Rangers. It sees them sit nine points behind Celtic, and the worst-ever side in Champions League group stage history.
Rangers, a week into the World Cup break, have now decided to sack van Bronckhorst. Kris Boyd says the “obvious” candidate to replace the Dutchman would be Michael Beale. Miller agrees, saying there would be “no surprises”.

“Sean Dyche has been mentioned, and his connection to Ross Wilson. Maybe Hasenhuttl, even Tedesco at Leipzig. One for me that will be right at the top of the list will be Michael Beale. I know his name has been bandied about.
“I think he fits, he knows the club, he knows the players. There will be no surprises if he walks back into the club, into the building in terms of the demand and the expectation of the players. He’s started his only journey pretty well.”
Miller: No surprises if Rangers choose Beale
It does make utter sense. Beale is well-liked at Rangers after his time spent under Gerrard, more than three years at Ibrox. Miller makes the point, he knows the club, and the players know him. But do Rangers need a freshness?
Do they need a manager to rip up the current script and bring in their own ideas and strategy? Beale might do that, given he would be returning as the main man. But a new approach might be needed if they are to claw Celtic back.
