Kris Boyd has told Sky Sports that QPR manager Michael Beale is the “obvious” candidate to bring in after Rangers confirmed the sacking of Giovanni van Bronckhorst on Monday morning – after a woeful start to the 2022-23 season.
Van Bronckhorst has been axed after a year in the job. He guided Rangers to the Europa League final, a Scottish Cup and then, Champions League qualification on a small-ish budget. But this season, the form has completely died off.
Injuries and a lack of effective signings in the summer have contributed. A number of players are out of contract, and plenty needs to be sorted out come January. Rangers sit second in the Premiership, nine points behind Celtic.
Not only that, but they finished their Champions League group stage campaign as the worst-ever in the history of the competition. Van Bronckhorst then, sacked. Beale is one of the favourites. Boyd thinks he is the “obvious replacement.”

“The obvious one at this moment in time would be Michael Beale. He obviously turned down the Wolves job. The Rangers fans remember what he did under Steven Gerrard. They’re extremely proud he helped achieve 55 for the club.
“There’s an obvious connection there. Whether Michael Beale would want to leave QPR at this moment in time, as I say he rejected Wolves, and whether he was prepared to wait for Ibrox; we don’t know. He will be definitely in the running.”
Boyd: Beale obvious candidate to bring in at Rangers
It would be a very good appointment. Beale is well-liked at Ibrox. He knows the club inside out after more than three years at Ibrox, and he is now shining as manager in England’s second tier. QPR sitting in seventh, winning nine times.
Unlike other names, Sean Dyche, Peter Bosz, Ralph Hasenhuttl – those that would expect Premier League wages, Beale would not. So, affordable, knows the club, impressing in his first stint as manager. As Boyd says, he is the obvious one.
