Stevie Nicol has told Liverpool transfer target Mason Mount to sign a new contract at Chelsea.

The Liverpool legend added that, if he was Chelsea, then he would ‘keep’ Mason Mount and ‘build the team around him’.

The 24-year-old is stumbling over a new contract at Stamford Bridge – it has resulted in the likes of Liverpool wanting to bring him on board.

In terms of Mount’s style and what he does without the ball, he certainly fits Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp’s profile. They need midfielders this summer, but Michael Owen has had a warning for them.

But given the mess at Chelsea, Nicol thinks he has to pen a new contract at his club, instead, as he told ESPN.

“He would be one that I would keep,” said Nicol. “He certainly has to sign a new contract. Otherwise, he won’t be at Stamford Bridge. There will be plenty of teams in for him.

“So, I would suggest that one of the first things they do is to get him signed and sealed.

“For me, people like him and Reece James. They are the type of players you build the team around.

“Mason Mount is one of the first ones I would make sure you tie up.”

SHOILD MOUNT LEAVE?

Chelsea won’t be in any form of Europe next season, so they are going to have a number of top players just playing Premier League football.

Yes, Chelsea is Mount’s boyhood club, but he has to think about his career.

So, if another team in the Champions League comes knocking for his services, then it will be interesting to see how he reacts.
