Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has explained why he wasn’t at his nation’s opening game of the World Cup against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Trudeau was instead snapped alongside girlfriend Katy Perry at the USA’s 4-1 win against Paraguay.

Many would have expected Trudeau to be in Toronto for the 1-1 draw against Bosnia, but he has explained why he was missing.

Why Justin Trudeau wasn’t at Canada vs Bosnia

Many outlets picked up on Trudeau’s decision to miss his nation’s opening game, but he has explained why he did so on social media, revealing that he wanted to support his girlfriend Perry, who performed at the opening ceremony.

He wrote: “Sometimes supportive boyfriend duties call. But you know who I’m rooting for to take the Cup.”

We don’t know if Trudeau will be at any more of Canada’s games, but we can expect to see lots of big stars at games.

Zohran Mamdani was at Brazil vs Morocco while legendary singer Rod Stewart has been spotted watching his beloved Scotland.

Donald Trump wasn’t at the USA’s first game of the tournament, but may appear later on.

Are Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry together?

Yes, Trudeau and Perry have been together ever since they were first linked to each other back in 2025.

Their relationship became public in June 2026 when the two were spotted on the red carpet for the singer’s premiere of her latest documentary.

They then sat alongside each other during the USA vs Paraguay game.
