Speaking on BT Sport, Rio Ferdinand has been discussing England’s young stars and he’s expressed regret about Jamal Musiala’s international situation.

The Bayern Munich star, of course, played for England at youth level when he was coming through, but when it came time to pledge his allegiance for a senior team, he picked Germany.

Musiala has recently been linked with a return to England after links with Liverpool emerged over the past fortnight, but Ferdinand wishes that he was playing for the national team.

Musiala for England

Ferdinand discussed the Bayern ace.

“Just imagine if we had kept hold of Musiala as well, it’s crazy the talent, I love seeing young talent whether they’re English or not, but to see them performing at this level as well, Champions League football going into a World Cup giving these guys a chance and a platform to perform. You hope that they can just go off and play hopefully,” Ferdinand said.

One that got away

Musiala may not be missed too much by England at the coming World Cup. After all, he doesn’t really fit into Gareth Southgate’s system and there’s an argument to make that he wouldn’t start for the Three Lions right now.

However, in years to come, this is a player England will almost certainly view as the one that got away.

At the age of just 19, he’s a star for one of Europe’s biggest clubs, and in a few years’ time, he may well be one of the best players on the planet.

England have so many talented youngsters coming through, but the best of the bunch may be playing for Germany as Musiala looks to have an incredibly high ceiling.
