After being fired as the USMNT manager nearly 10 years ago, Jurgen Klinsmann has delivered his verdict on the hype surrounding the national team.
Jurgen Klinsmann’s five-year tenure as USMNT manager was a dramatic era of highs and lows. He famously guided the U.S. through the 2014 World Cup “Group of Death” to the Round of 16, but his experimentation and a disappointing November 2016 qualifying collapse ultimately led to his firing.
Nowadays, Klinsmann is primarily working as a media pundit and technical analyst for soccer organizations like ESPN.
Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup career has come to an end. How do you feel his failings at the tournament impact his legacy? And why? 🤔
The legendary Portugal forward scored 11 career World Cup goals, but only one came in the knockout rounds…
Mauricio Pochettino was given confidence from Klinsmann’s predictions prior to the 2026 World Cup, where he stated that the USA could go all the way if things went perfectly.
And everything did look promising after wins over Paraguay, Australia and Bosnia, but the defeat to Belgium brought things crashing back down to earth.
Jurgen Klinsmann’s verdict on whether the USMNT were overhyped
Thibaut Courtois labelled the USMNT as overhyped after their World Cup exit, and he isn’t the only Belgian player who shares that opinion.
Speaking on the topic of being overhyped, former USA boss Jurgen Klinsmann had his say on where it all went wrong at the World Cup when talking to ESPN.
“Well, I think the overhyping, or you know, the high expectations came automatically through their fantastic performance in the first game against Paraguay. Those 30, 45 minutes, 60 minutes against Paraguay gave us all the feeling that we are ready for more.
“But unfortunately, it didn’t happen then afterwards. They can definitely play on a very high level, which they showed. But the key in a tournament like this is consistency. And if you want to go really far, then this type of consistency should actually grow and get better and better game by game, you know, like the big teams usually do in a tournament like that.
“Not all obviously did that. You know, other teams went home earlier like Germany, Holland, even Brazil went home.
“I think you know the team kind of set the bar so high with their first game against Paraguay that afterwards they were not able anymore to to keep that level and now they go out this way, which was basically a lesson by Belgium, unfortunately.
“So you can talk about a certain overhype, but that overhype came automatically after the performance against Paraguay.”
