West Ham are reportedly in talks to sign former Borussia Dortmund centre-back and rumoured Manchester United target Dan-Axel Zagadou, who is a free agent after being released by the Bundesliga giants this summer.

According to journalist Pedro Almeida on Twitter, the Hammers are ‘in direct talks’ with the French defender over potentially signing the 23-year-old, with Zagadou struggling to find a new club over the summer transfer window despite his CV with Dortmund.

The former PSG academy prospect was a regular for Dortmund during his spell in Germany, yet since leaving the Signal Iduna Park, Zagadou has struggled to find a new club to sign for, with West Ham now seemingly in talks to bring the towering Frenchman to the London Stadium.

West Ham have been linked with Zagadou this summer, with United also reportedly keen on the former French youth international, though Erik Ten Hag’s side now look set to miss out on the centre-back given the Red Devils’ new winning centre-back pairing of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

With West Ham’s injury problems at the back continuing to cause problems, it makes sense why David Moyes has made a post-transfer window move for Zagadou, who could provide good cover in a key position for the Irons as well as blossom into a defensive powerhouse that is suited to the Premier League.

Zagadou’s Dortmund career was an interesting one, to say the least, and with the defender now seemingly heading to West Ham for free, the 23-year-old has the chance to redeem his career after failing to impress in patches during his stay in the Bundesliga.

Indeed, Zagadou is still young for a defender, and given Moyes’ impressive record of developing players at West Ham, there’s a good chance that the French centre-back can blossom into something quite special if he hits the ground running in east London and adapts to the physicality of the Premier League with ease.
