It says quite a lot that none of Son Heung-min’s strikes for Tottenham Hotspur against Leicester City seven days ago were the best goal of the encounter.
The Lilywhites hammered Brendan Rodgers’s side 6-2 in North London and Son came off the bench to score a hat-trick, with two of them being absolute beauties.
However, the best goal of the 90 minutes was probably scored by someone who Spurs are reported to have tried to sign during the summer transfer window.
James Maddison scored an ‘exquisite‘ first-half volley which stunned Tottenham defenders.

In that moment, Antonio Conte might have regretted not signing the £60 million-rated English playmaker, but is he still interested going forward?
Well, possibly.
Journalist Pete O’Rourke has suggested via Give Me Sport that the Lilywhites might retain an interest in Maddison, claiming that they are ‘long-term admirerers’ of the former Norwich City dynamo.
He said: “Despite Leicester’s problems this season, I think Maddison’s probably been their standout performer so far. He got a good goal against Tottenham and probably looked their liveliest player in that defeat as well. Tottenham are long-term admirers of Maddison and they have liked him for a while now.”
Do Tottenham need Maddison?
In a word, yes.
They haven’t had a proper playmaker in North London since Christian Eriksen left for Inter Milan during the winter of 2020 and really, Conte will know it’s a problem area.
The Italian isn’t short on creativity at the moment, but that well has run dry for Spurs before and that’s where someone like Maddison is worth is weight in gold.
It’ll cost Tottenham – or someone else – a pretty penny to sign him, but it’s certainly something worth considering – particularly after his goal last week.
