Speaking on the Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast, Alasdair Gold has been discussing Christian Eriksen and Tottenham’s stance on signing the Dane at the moment.

The former Spurs man’s Brentford contract is up at the end of the month, and in recent weeks there have been persistent and ongoing rumours about the midfielder potentially returning to north London.

Tottenham have seemingly been the frontrunners for his signature for quite some time now, with reports stating that the London club were ‘confident’ about signing the 30-year-old.

However, according to Gold, Tottenham are now distancing themselves from the idea of signing Eriksen.

What’s been said?

Gold spoke about Eriksen.

“I think it’s a bit of a no-brainer, but from everything I’m hearing, and I’ve spoken to people on both sides of this deal, it all seems to be pointing in the same direction and Spurs seem to be cooling their interest in him,” Gold said.

“From what I understand, the last time anyone from Spurs was in contact with his camp was two weeks ago, nothing since. The voices from Spurs are distancing themselves from any discussions about Eriksen whatsoever.”

Gold then concluded on Eriksen after discussing other options for the midfielder.

“It will be interesting to see what happens with him, I’ve been so surprised, it’s a real unified voice within Spurs that are distancing themselves from him entirely, so something has clearly made them change their mind.”

Makes sense

As brilliant as it would have been to see Eriksen back at Spurs, backing away from this move makes sense from a footballing standpoint.

Think about it, Tottenham are currently playing a 3-4-3, so there really isn’t room for the Brentford midfielder in this team at the moment as Spurs need energy in the middle of the park.

The signing of Yves Bissouma has left even less room in that midfield, and while we don’t know the specifics, we’re sure that Eriksen would command a decent wage, and that money could be used elsewhere.

Simply put, there are bigger priorities for Spurs at the moment.
