According to The Athletic, Arsenal are very much interested in signing Oleksandr Zinchenko this summer.
The Gunners are seemingly very keen to strengthen at left-back. They’ve already tried, and failed, to sign Lisandro Martinez – who they were reportedly planning on using as a full-back, and now they’re in for Zinchenko.
However, as always, completing a deal like this may be easier said than done, but luckily, Arsenal have a contingency plan in place for if they can’t land the Ukrainian.
Indeed, Fabrizio Romano reported earlier this week that Arsenal hold an interest in Sergio Gomez, and now, speaking on the Que Golazo Podcast, he’s stated that the Spaniard is their backup target if they can’t get Zinchenko.

Romano spoke about Gomez being Arsenal’s second-choice.
“He is now open to leaving Manchester City, a few weeks ago he wanted to stay, he wanted to continue at all costs, but now he is open to go,” Romano.
“Let’s wait and see, but I feel that this is the priority for Arsenal. Sergio Gomez is the backup option for Arsenal in the list, he’s playing for Anderlecht, he’s a good player, but the priority is Zinchenko.”
Not a bad alternative
Zinchenko may be Arsenal’s top priority this summer, but Gomez certainly wouldn’t be a bad alternative.
The Spaniard provided no fewer than 15 assists for his club last season, and he’s also starred for his country at youth level, winning numerous caps and accolades for Spain’s U21s, U19s and U17s.
Zinchenko is, of course, the safer bet. After all, he’s proven in the Premier League and Mikel Arteta has worked with him before, but at the age of just 21, there’s reason to believe that Gomez could in fact have the higher ceiling.
