Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, Duncan Castles has shared exactly how Jose Mourinho’s compensation works after being sacked by Tottenham.
It was widely reported that Jose Mourinho didn’t have a break clause in his contract at Spurs, meaning that the club would have to pay off the full amount owed on the remainder of his deal.
However, Castles has been informed that this isn’t actually the case, stating that Spurs only have to pay him for a year, explaining what the situation would be if he took another job.
“The compensation package that was included in his contract at Tottenham, which we told you several weeks ago was not the remaining value of his contract until 2023 as had been reported in the English press, it was actually a defined clause that resulted in Tottenham paying a lot less than that,” Castles said.
“That package I’m told is one that has Tottenham liable for his salary for one-year, and his salary will be maintained at the level determined in the Tottenham contract. So if he were to take another job elsewhere and the pay at the new job was less than his Tottenham contract, Spurs will have to make up the balance up to one year after they dismissed him.”
This is certainly an interesting update on Jose Mourinho’s compensation.
Financially, there’s no incentive for Mourinho to take another job at this point, so perhaps we can write off the idea of him becoming the Celtic manager in the coming weeks, despite links.
Of course, Mourinho could take a job just for the love of the game, but with Tottenham paying him for the next year, there’s no rush for him to get straight back into management.
